Complete Spring Festival Folk Culture Guide
Spring Festival is more than holidays and red envelopes — folk activities are spectacular across China, from New Year’s Eve dinner to temple fairs.
New Year’s Eve Dinner
The reunion dinner is Spring Festival’s climax. Northern families wrap dumplings together — some hide coins inside, bringing luck to whoever finds one. Southern tables overflow with dishes: braised fish (abundance year after year), rice cake (rising prosperity), eight-treasure rice (sweet reunion).
Temple Fairs
Beijing’s Ditan Temple Fair — the most famous Spring Festival fair, featuring lion dances, candied hawthorn sticks, dough figurines, and crosstalk comedy. Incredibly crowded but bursting with festive atmosphere.

Chengdu’s Wuhou Shrine Grand Fair — Three Kingdoms-themed with dazzling lantern displays. Best experienced at night.
Xi’an City Wall Lantern Festival — the entire wall is adorned with massive lanterns, offering spectacular nighttime city views from atop the wall.
Fireworks and Firecrackers
New Year’s Eve midnight and Day 1 morning are peak firecracker times. Many large cities (Beijing, Shanghai core areas) have banned fireworks, but suburbs and smaller cities are still lively. For the most authentic “farewell the old year in firecracker smoke” experience, head to rural areas or small towns.
New Year Visits and Red Envelopes
Days 1-6 are for visiting. Bring gifts (fruit, milk, health products) to elders’ homes, offer auspicious greetings. Elders give red envelopes to younger generation — typically ¥100, 200, 500, or 800. WeChat red envelopes are also popular now.
Tips: Spring Festival is peak travel season — flight and hotel prices double. Book a month ahead. But if you can handle crowds, it’s the most concentrated burst of Chinese culture.
