About Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month and is one of China’s most important traditional holidays. The core activities are family reunion, eating mooncakes, and admiring the full moon. In 2024 it falls on September 17th.
Top Moon-Viewing Spots
West Lake, Hangzhou: Three Pools Mirroring the Moon is the classic Mid-Autumn scene — candles in stone pagodas create multiple moon reflections. Pinghu Qiuyue area stays open late and free, with the full moon reflected on the lake.
Summer Palace, Beijing: At certain angles, moonlight passes through all 17 arches of the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. Moon-viewing by Kunming Lake with imperial garden backdrop.
Huangshan: Moon-viewing above 1,800m with crystal-clear air makes the moon appear larger and brighter. Guangming Peak and Shixin Peak are the best spots. Book summit lodging early — rooms sell out around Mid-Autumn.
Gulangyu, Xiamen: Seaside moon-viewing plus the Minnan bobing custom (a dice game to win mooncakes). Cafes and colonial buildings on the island are especially romantic under moonlight.
