License Requirements

Foreign driving licenses are not recognized in mainland China — you must hold a Chinese license or a temporary one. To get a temporary license: bring your foreign license + passport + photo to the local DMV (车管所); valid for 90 days, fee ~¥50. Hong Kong/Macau license holders have special mutual recognition arrangements.

Car Rental Process

Shenzhou Rent-a-Car and eHi are the main platforms, supporting English booking and foreign credit cards. Pick-up requires temporary license + passport + credit card (deposit ¥1,000–3,000). Full insurance is recommended; out-of-pocket per incident is typically ¥0–500.

Road Rules & Conditions

China drives on the right; speed limits are in km/h. Highways: 120 km/h; urban roads: 60–80 km/h. At ETC toll booths, foreigners use the manual lane — pay with cash or UnionPay. Use Amap for navigation; far more accurate than Google Maps in China.
