Beijing has no shortage of sights — what most visitors lack is a priority order. This list helps you hit the essentials first and skip the tourist traps.
Photo spots: Hall of Supreme Harmony plaza (arrive early for fewer crowds), Imperial Garden (last stop before the exit — don’t skip it), Nine Dragon Screen.
Enter through Meridian Gate, exit via the Gate of Divine Prowess. Allow 3 hours. The Treasure Gallery and Clock Exhibition Hall cost an extra ¥10 each — both worth it. Closed Mondays. Book on the Palace Museum mini-program; walk-ins are not accepted.

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the postcard shot, but the real fun is the Echo Wall and the acoustic design of the Circular Mound Altar. Visit in the morning to see locals doing tai chi and playing jianzi in the park.
The Summer Palace is imperial garden design at its peak. The Long Corridor has 14,000+ painted scenes, each telling a different story. In summer, take a boat to Nanhu Island for the best view of the Seventeen-Arch Bridge.
Nanluogu Alley’s main drag is touristy — the real charm is in the side hutongs (Mao’er Hutong, Yu’er Hutong). Shichahai’s lakeside bars and restaurants come alive at night.
A converted factory complex turned contemporary art district. Most galleries are free. UCCA Center for Contemporary Art is the anchor venue. Weekend markets add extra energy.
The square itself takes 30 minutes, but the National Museum of China needs at least 2 hours. The “Ancient China” permanent exhibition is free and covers prehistory through the Qing Dynasty.
Qianmen Dashilan is old Beijing’s commercial street — Quanjude Roast Duck and Ruifuxiang Silk have been here for over a century. More authentic than Wangfujing.
The Olympic Park area. The Bird’s Nest and Water Cube are more impressive lit up at night. Exterior viewing is free; entry to the Bird’s Nest costs about ¥50.
Beijing’s most active Tibetan Buddhist temple. The 18-meter sandalwood Maitreya Buddha is the centerpiece. Quieter than the Forbidden City — a good place to slow down.
