The Double Ninth Festival (Chongyang) on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month is also called the “Height-Ascending Festival.” Traditional activities include climbing mountains, admiring chrysanthemums, drinking chrysanthemum wine, and wearing dogwood. Usually in mid-October, when autumn weather is at its finest.

Best Mountains to Climb

Mount Tai (Shandong): Chief of the Five Sacred Mountains. Climbing 6,660 steps to watch sunrise is a bucket-list experience. Entry 115 yuan, night climb 4-5 hours, sunrise around 5am. Rent a military coat (20 yuan) at the summit against the cold.

Huangshan (Anhui): Famous for peculiar pines, bizarre rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs. Autumn has the highest chance of cloud sea. Entry 190 yuan, round-trip cable car 130 yuan. Stay one night at the summit for sunrise and sunset.

Chongyang Hiking: China's Most Beautiful Mountains

Huashan (Shaanxi): Famous for its steepness. Changkong Plank Road and Harrier Flip challenge your limits (free but you queue and sign waivers). West Peak sunset is magnificent. Entry 160 yuan.

Emeishan (Sichuan): Golden Summit at 3,099m for cloud sea and Buddha’s light. Autumn brings red foliage and monkeys everywhere. Entry 160 yuan, cable car 130 yuan. Four-star hotel at the summit (about 600 yuan/night).
