Qipao: Symbol of Eastern Elegance
The qipao (also known as cheongsam) is one of China’s most recognizable garments, evolving from Manchu noble dress into a modern fashion icon.
Evolution of the Qipao
Qing Dynasty qipao was loose, straight-cut, full-length with wide sleeves and elaborate embroidery. Worn daily by Manchu women.
1920s-30s Shanghai tailors transformed it with fitted Western-style cutting to accentuate the figure. Mandarin collar, side slits, and knotted buttons became signature elements. This was the golden age of the qipao.
Modern qipao comes in flexible lengths and fabrics — short, sleeveless, and fusion styles exist. It remains the go-to choice for weddings, formal dinners, and diplomatic events.
Getting a Custom Qipao
Shanghai and Hong Kong are the best cities for custom qipao. Shanghai’s Changle Road and South Maoming Road have many established tailor shops. The process: choose fabric → measurements → fitting → finished garment, usually taking 1-2 weeks. Prices range from ¥800 (basic) to over ¥10,000 (hand-embroidered silk).
