Zhongshan Suit & Tang Suit: Men’s Traditional Wear
Chinese men’s traditional clothing isn’t limited to one style. The Zhongshan suit and Tang suit are two most representative choices with completely different aesthetics.
The Zhongshan Suit
Designed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, blending a Chinese mandarin collar with Western tailoring. Four pockets symbolize propriety, righteousness, integrity, and shame. Five front buttons represent the five branches of government. The most important political garment of 20th-century China — Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai were both iconic in Zhongshan suits.
Modern wear — now mostly seen at formal diplomatic events and state occasions. Updated versions (slim mandarin-collar blazers) are gaining popularity at weddings and business events. Custom tailoring costs ¥1,000-5,000.
The Tang Suit
Characterized by symmetrical front opening, knotted buttons, and brocade fabric. Colors are mainly red, gold, and navy. Wearing red Tang suits for Spring Festival family photos is a classic scene. For daily wear, dark updated versions are understated yet distinctly Chinese.
