Chinese Baijiu & Huangjiu: Choosing for Gifts or Yourself
Baijiu and Huangjiu are China’s two most important traditional spirits. One burns like fire, the other warms like jade — each with its own charm and customs.
Baijiu Basics
Baijiu is China’s national spirit, typically 38-65% ABV. It smells intense and tastes even more so — many foreigners are “shocked” by their first sip. But quality baijiu is smooth on the palate with a long finish.
Four Major Aroma Types:
- Sauce-aroma — Maotai is the icon. Complex, layered flavor.
- Light-aroma — Fenjiu. Clean and crisp, best for beginners.
- Rice-aroma — Guilin Sanhua. Rice-based, slightly sweet.
Huangjiu Basics
Huangjiu is China’s oldest alcohol (3,000 years), 14-20% ABV. Shaoxing huangjiu is most famous — Nü’er Hong and Huadiao are both Shaoxing varieties. Best served warm; add a few dried plums for extra flavor.

Tips: Feitian Maotai’s official price is ¥1,499 but it’s nearly impossible to buy — market price is usually ¥2,500-3,000. For tasting, don’t chase Maotai — Fenjiu Qinghua series offers excellent value.
