September Weekend Getaways

September — between summer vacation and Golden Week — is the perfect travel window. Fewer crowds, lower prices, and pleasant weather.

Moganshan, Zhejiang

3-hour drive from Shanghai. Bamboo-covered mountains dotted with guesthouses and resorts. September temperatures of 20-28°C, 5-8 degrees cooler than the city. Cycle bamboo forest trails by day, soak in infinity pools under the stars at night. Guesthouses ¥500-2,000/night.

Wuyuan, Jiangxi

Though Wuyuan is famous for March rapeseed flowers, September’s “autumn drying” is photographers’ favorite. In Huangling village, every household dries chili peppers, corn, and pumpkins on rooftops — the red-and-yellow “shai qiu” scene is China’s most photogenic rural landscape.

Yangshuo, Guangxi

September’s Li River has ample water without flooding — ideal for bamboo raft drifting. Moon Hill, Ten-Mile Gallery cycling, West Street night market — spend a slow-paced weekend among karst mountains and rivers. Guilin to Yangshuo by high-speed rail takes just 20 minutes.

Dali, Yunnan

September’s Dali sees the rainy season ending, with Erhai Lake turning mirror-blue. Cycling around Erhai (about 120km) is the classic route, passing Bai ethnic villages, small cafés, and picturesque scenery. Cangshan Mountain offers dramatic cloud formations. Shuanglang’s lakeside guesthouses are Instagram-famous spots.

Tips: September flights and hotels are 30-50% cheaper than summer. Travel before National Day for a completely different level of tranquility.
