Payment Failed? A Visitor's Emergency Guide
The payment code spins for ten seconds. Red text appears: “Payment failed.” Five people are waiting behind you.
It’s not common, but when it happens, you need to know your next move in thirty seconds.

Network issues top the list — payment codes need a live connection to refresh. Card limits come second; foreign cards often have per-transaction or daily caps. Occasional identity verification triggers on large first-time payments. And sometimes the merchant’s scanner is simply broken.
Step 1: Switch apps. WeChat Pay down? Try Alipay. Their backend systems are independent. Step 2: Switch networks. Turn off Wi-Fi and use mobile data, or vice versa. Step 3: Pay cash. This is exactly why carrying ¥200–300 in cash matters — not for daily use, but for moments like this.

Failed payments don’t charge you, but check your transaction history afterward to confirm. In the rare case of a charge without merchant receipt, file a dispute through in-app customer service — usually resolved within 24 hours. In Alipay: tap ”?” top-right → Contact Support → Payment Issues.
Prevention beats emergency response: open your payment code on hotel Wi-Fi before heading out, know your card’s daily limit, and keep both apps logged in.
