Chinese Herbal Medicine & Wellness Gifts

Goji berries, bird’s nest, and donkey-hide gelatin — treasured wellness products in Chinese culture and premium gifts for friends abroad.

Goji Berries (Gouqi)

Ningxia goji berries are universally recognized as the highest quality. Plump, red, and naturally sweet. Dried goji can be steeped in water, added to soups, infused in liquor, or eaten as snacks. Supermarket prices: ¥100-300/jin depending on quality. Zhongning County, Ningxia is the origin — cheapest bought locally.

Chinese Herbal Gifts: Goji, Bird's Nest & Ejiao

Bird’s Nest (Yanwo)

Bird’s nest is built by swiftlets using saliva, rich in collagen. Chinese believe it beautifies skin and nourishes the lungs. Quality bird’s nest is sold by the gram, ¥30-100/g. Note: most comes from Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia) — China is the consumer, not the producer.

Donkey-Hide Gelatin (Ejiao)

Ejiao originates from Dong’e County, Shandong, made from donkey hide. Chinese women regard it as the ultimate blood-nourishing tonic. Dong’e Ejiao is the most famous brand, ¥800-1,500 per 250g box. Convenient forms like ejiao cakes and powder are now available.

Other Wellness Gifts

  • Flower tea combos — rose + goji + chrysanthemum + red dates, pre-packaged for beautiful and practical gifts.
  • Moxa sticks — made from mugwort for moxibustion therapy, easy to use at home.

Tips: Many countries restrict importing herbal medicines. Bird’s nest and ginseng may be confiscated at European/American customs. Check destination country regulations before traveling.
